Lightning Protection System Design
Gorman Lightning System is aware that failure to design a proper lightning system makes it ineffective. A lightning protection system is designed to create a direct path for lightning charge to the ground. The system acts at the point where the lightning strikes keeping the structure of building and it’s occupants safe. The experienced engineers at Gorman Lightning Protection will create a perfect design that will protect your property from lightning.

Lightning Protection System Installations
The core components for the lightning protection system are: Rods or Air terminals, Main conductors, Grounding, Bonds and Surge Protector. Air terminals, formerly called lightning rods, are installed above a roof. These provide a contact point for electrical charges from the lightning strike approaching a building. The National Fire Protection Association’s NFPA 780—Standard for the Installation of Lightning Protection Systems requires that the air terminals are located at 20 feet on-center maximum along ridges, parapets, and other high points on a building. Air terminals are made of copper or aluminum and should be selected based on roofing type. Connected to the air terminals are the main conductors, which then feed the electricity to the grounding, where it dissipates harmlessly into the earth. If lightning hits the structure, it will preferentially strike the rod and be conducted to ground through a wire, instead of passing through the structure, where it could start a fire or cause electrocution. Lightning rods are also called finials, air terminals, or strike termination devices.
We can install a concealed, partially concealed or exposed lightning system on your roof to protect your property from lightning. When designed during construction all of the lightning protection system, except the rooftop terminals, can be concealed and run inside the structure. Decorative finials can also be used as air terminals, making the lightning protection an architectural accent. Fully concealed system can installed when constructing a new house. A partially concealed lightning protection system can be installed on an existing house depending upon how much access there is to run the cable. A fully exposed system has cables and lightning rods on the roof. The cables can be hidden behind the ridges and the down conductors can run behind the gutter sprouts for less visibility.

Lightning Protection System Inspections
In addition to design and installation of lightning protection system, Gorman Lightning Protection also performs inspections. We make sure the there are no loose connections, if system has been weakened by corrosion, all down conductors and grounding electrodes are intact and more.
Gorman Lightning Protection provides lightning protection and surge protection systems to residential and commercial establishments such ranch, farms, church, trees, schools, hospitals, airports, factories, data centers and office buildings. We have also installed lightning protection systems for oil fields.

Choose Your Lightning System
Concealed: a fully concealed system can only be installed during the building of a new house. The cable and connections are made in the walls and attic. The only thing visible are the lightning rods.
Partially concealed: a partially concealed system can sometimes be installed on a existing house that has enough access and attic space to run the cable. For this type of installation the down conductors will be exposed from the soffit to the ground.
Exposed: a fully exposed system will have cable and lightning rods on the roof. The cable will be ran behind the ridges and hips to be hidden as much as possible. The down conductors can be ran behind gutter downspouts for less visibility.
